Pripyat was an extraordinarily young city: the average resident was around 26 years old, and more than a dozen kindergartens were operating here. The city was built for nuclear workers and their families, which meant it had more children than almost anywhere else.

That’s exactly why the abandoned kindergartens became the most haunting symbol of Chornobyl. And among them stands «Cheburashka», Kindergarten No. 10 — rusty cots, scattered toys, and silence where the loudest place in the city should have been.

What it is and why people come here

«Cheburashka» (Чебурашка) was a typical Soviet kindergarten — one of dozens in Pripyat. It was named after a beloved Soviet cartoon character, a big-eared, wide-eyed creature whose name now sounds almost unbearably tender for a derelict ruin.

Visitors don’t come for the architecture — the building itself is unremarkable. They come for the feeling. A kindergarten is a place where life stopped mid-sentence: cots still laid out, cubbies still labelled with children’s names, toys left exactly where they were dropped. Nowhere does the disaster hit harder than in a place that was built for children.

That’s why the abandoned kindergartens of Pripyat, alongside the iconic Ferris wheel and the «Lazurny» (Azure) swimming pool, have become the defining visual symbols of Chornobyl.

History: a city of children that froze overnight

Pripyat was founded in 1970 as a purpose-built satellite city for the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It was a model Soviet «atom city»: new apartment blocks, wide boulevards, swimming pools, a palace of culture, and an abundance of childcare facilities. By 1986, around 47,000 people lived here, and the city was still growing fast.

The explosion happened in the early hours of 26 April 1986. On that first day, residents were told nothing — children went calmly to their kindergartens, played outside, while just a few kilometres away, the reactor was burning.

Evacuation was announced on 27 April. Residents were told to take documents and belongings for three days. They never came back — Kindergarten «Cheburashka» has been waiting for its children for nearly forty years.

Within hours, a city of 47,000 was empty. Toys, cots, children’s drawings on the walls — all left exactly where they were. Since then, nature and looters have done their work, but the overwhelming sense of «frozen childhood» has never disappeared.

Legends and local lore

Pripyat’s kindergartens have spawned their own mythology — from genuine observations to outright staged compositions.

1. Dolls that «stare back»

The most iconic image of Pripyat — dolls and gas masks arranged on children’s cots. They’re genuinely here, and they’re genuinely unsettling. But the truth is worth knowing: a significant portion of these «shots» were staged by photographers over the years, who deliberately arranged toys for a more dramatic image. Reality is often more mundane than the legend — and no less heartbreaking for it.

2. Children’s laughter in the silence

Stalkers (urban explorers of the Zone) love to retell how someone «heard» children laughing or running in the empty rooms. There’s nothing supernatural here — it’s the acoustics of empty buildings and an imagination supercharged by context. But honestly: few places send the imagination into overdrive quite like an abandoned kindergarten.

3. The kindergarten that is fading away

There’s a sadder «legend of the present»: every year, Pripyat’s abandoned structures deteriorate further — ceilings collapse, rooms are swallowed by vegetation. What you can still see today may simply be gone within a few years. In that sense, «Cheburashka» really is gradually vanishing.

What to see on site

Dormitory rooms with cots. Rows of rusty children’s beds are the most powerful sight in the kindergarten. More than any caption, they convey the true scale of the silence.

Playrooms and group rooms. The remains of furniture, labelled cubbies, wall paintings and Soviet-era display boards. The everyday life of a 1980s Soviet kindergarten is still readable here.

Neighbouring Pripyat locations. The kindergarten makes most sense as part of a broader walk through the ghost city. Full context is in our overview of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.

Getting there and access

Important. Pripyat lies inside the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Independent access is not possible — entry is only permitted as part of an organised tour with official authorisation and a licensed guide.

Current status. Due to the full-scale war, the temporary occupation of the Zone in early 2022, and the mining of parts of the territory, tourist access is currently closed. Any travel planning must be based on current official decisions.

Orientation. The kindergarten is located in the residential part of Pripyat. On an organised tour, it is typically included in the walking route through the city.

Traveller’s checklist

When the Zone reopens:

  • Official tour and permit: access is prohibited without them.
  • Sturdy footwear: inside there is broken glass, debris and collapsed flooring throughout.
  • Dosimeter: radiation levels in Pripyat are uneven.
  • Torch / flashlight: the back rooms are dark even in daylight.
  • Respect: don’t move anything «for the shot» and don’t take anything — this is essentially a memorial site.

What NOT to do: climb to upper floors of structurally unsound buildings, or wander off the route alone.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the kindergarten called «Cheburashka»?

After a popular Soviet cartoon character — a round-faced, big-eared creature beloved by generations of Soviet children. Soviet kindergartens were often given fairy-tale names to make them easier for children to remember.

Are all the toys in the photos real?

The toys are real, but many of the dramatic compositions are staged. Photographers have been arranging dolls and gas masks for more striking images for years.

Can you visit right now?

Not currently. Access to the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone is closed due to the war and mine contamination. Check the latest official guidance before planning.

Is it safe to go inside?

The building is progressively collapsing, so even on a guided tour you enter with care. Radiation levels inside are uneven — a dosimeter is essential.

Kindergarten «Cheburashka» doesn’t impress with scale or spectacle. It hits somewhere else entirely — at the very idea of interrupted childhood. The city was built for children, and it ended with rows of empty cots.

If you ever find yourself here, don’t let the staged dolls distract you. The most powerful thing is not the eerie photograph — it’s the simple thought: these children just went home one day, and never came back.

Kindergarten No. 10 «Cheburashka» in Pripyat: toys that have been waiting for children for forty years
