The lesson schedule still hangs on the wall, open textbooks lie scattered across the floor, and the classroom holds a silence a school should never know. The bell here hasn't rung since 1986.

Tovstyi Lis was once a large Polissia village a few dozen kilometers from the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Its school was meant to give local kids a future. Instead, it became one of the quietest buildings in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.

What it is and why people visit

Tovstyi Lis is one of those villages that vanished from the map not through slow decline, but in a single night of evacuation. Before the Chornobyl disaster, it was a living settlement with its own school, where hundreds of children from the surrounding Polissia region studied.

Today the school is left with bare walls, a roof slowly giving way to time, and the everyday details that make the place so powerful: rows of desks, a chalkboard, fragments of teaching aids. Visitors don't come here for a thrill — they come for the feeling of time stopped cold, the moment an entire village simply ceased to exist while everything stayed exactly where it was.

History

For centuries, the Polissia villages north of Chornobyl lived off the forest, the rivers, and the land. Tovstyi Lis was typical but fairly large: farms, a community club, a shop, and a school — the heart of the community, where children from several streets gathered every morning.

On April 26, 1986, the explosion of Chornobyl's fourth reactor changed everything. Over the following weeks and months, dozens of settlements within the zone's radius were evacuated. Tovstyi Lis was among the villages left behind — people were taken away, and the buildings were left standing empty.

The village that was never resettled

Unlike a few villages where some residents later returned unofficially (the so-called "samosely," self-settlers), Tovstyi Lis was effectively emptied for good. With no one left to maintain them, the wooden and brick buildings began slowly crumbling, and the forest started literally reclaiming the streets. The school, as one of the village's largest structures, outlasted the houses.

The satellite city of Pripyat became the symbol of the disaster. But the true scale of the tragedy lies in places like Tovstyi Lis — dozens of villages just like it, almost never mentioned.

Local lore and legends

The abandoned villages of the exclusion zone have collected their share of stories — some eerie, some surprisingly warm and human.

1. The bell that rang after the evacuation

Among stalkers and zone workers, there's a story that the school bell can sometimes still be "heard" echoing through empty schools — almost certainly just wind moving through empty hallways, plus a healthy dose of imagination. But standing alone in a classroom, it's an easy story to believe.

2. The desks someone keeps rearranging

Another tale claims the furniture in abandoned classrooms occasionally "moves" on its own. The rational explanation is simple: photographers and looters have been shifting things around for decades. But the legend has a life of its own.

What to see on site

The classrooms. This is where the impression hits hardest: rows of desks, the remains of a chalkboard, and here and there scattered Soviet-era notebooks and textbooks.

Hallways and the entrance hall. Long empty corridors that once buzzed with the noise of recess now produce that same "frozen in time" effect that draws people into the zone.

The schoolyard and surrounding village. The school is part of a much larger dead village. Nearby are the remains of houses, farm buildings, and streets slowly disappearing under the forest.

How to get there

Important: there's currently no legal way to visit. Following the full-scale invasion of 2022 and the occupation of the Chornobyl zone, tourist routes were suspended. A significant portion of the territory has been mined, and the zone itself now holds the status of a closed area of military significance.

Who can enter. Right now, access is limited to people accredited by the Ministry of Defense or relevant state agencies, along with researchers and zone staff — not tourists.

When it might reopen. In 2025–2026, some routes are gradually being restored, though under tighter control due to martial law. Before making any plans, always check the official access status of the zone.

Traveler's checklist

  • Check: the official access status of the exclusion zone before making any plans.
  • Understand: entering the zone without authorization carries both criminal liability and a real risk from landmines.
  • Travel: only with a licensed operator and proper permits, when (and if) routes reopen.
  • Respect: this is a site of tragedy and a community's evacuated life — not a backdrop for dramatic photos.
  • Don't: take anything from the site — objects here are part of its memory, and many are still radioactive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Tovstyi Lis right now?

No. The Chornobyl Exclusion Zone is closed to tourists due to the war and landmines. Legal access is limited to accredited individuals, researchers, and zone staff.

Is it safe to be there?

Outside organized routes — no. Beyond radiation levels, large parts of the zone have been mined since 2022, and minefield maps remain incomplete.

How is Tovstyi Lis different from Pripyat?

Pripyat was an abandoned city built for nuclear plant workers. Tovstyi Lis is a large Polissia village, so the atmosphere here is different: not urban ruins, but rural life that suddenly froze in place.

When will the zone reopen to tourists?

There's no fixed date. Some routes are being restored gradually, but the decision depends on martial law and demining progress. Watch official announcements for updates.

The abandoned school of Tovstyi Lis isn't about the "horrors of the zone." It's about how ordinary life — a lesson schedule, a recess, a school bell — can be cut short in a single spring night.

One day, travelers may be able to come here again. For now, the classroom stands with its textbooks open, waiting for a September 1st that will never come.

Attention! Part of Ukraine was occupied during Russia's unfounded military aggression against us and other democratic countries!

russia is a terrorist country, russians are murderers, thieves and rapists.

Russia's unhuman aggression against Ukraine since 2014 has led to the loss of homes and lives not only of many Ukrainians, but also of citizens of other countries and nationalities.

We consider any military actions against any state in the 21st century unacceptable and stupid, but unfortunately the Russians do not think so, and therefore many democratic countries, including Moldova, Georgia and our homeland, suffer from barbaric aggression.

Therefore, until the occupied parts of Ukraine are demilitarized and returned to our state, we remind users about the real danger of visiting the territories occupied by russia.
